This course is a self-contained introduction to theories of notated Western (European) music and related ideas found in jazz, rock, film, other popular forms, and traditional folk genres. We will also examine the synthesis of European and African diaspora music through forced migration and enslavement during the French, Spanish, and Anglo-American colonial eras in the Caribbean and the Americas. Fundamentals of pitch (melody, harmony, counterpoint, tuning), time (rhythm and form), and other parameters (including timbre and instrumentation) will be analyzed in a variety of musical contexts.
