To develop an understanding of the mechanical behavior of solids within the context of a 3D continuum mathematical framework. The course aims to develop the ability to rigorously describe and/or predict the deformation and failure of solids using the concepts of linear elasticity, plasticity, and fracture. The course is intended to provide a strong foundation for future courses and practice, and to improve the ability to utilize computers to address real-world problems in mechanics.

When Offered Fall, Summer. Offered in summer through the Engineering Cooperative Program.

Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: MATH 2940, ENGRD 2020, ENGRD 3200.

Outcomes
  • The course is intended to introduce students to the necessary tools for rigorously describing the deformation and failure of solids, and provide the necessary foundation for future courses and practice.
