Immunology in Animal Health and Disease

Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2023-2024.

Covers selected concepts in immunology, with a focus on those that are important to domestic animal health and disease prevention. Students learn how to apply their knowledge of immunological principles to understand current literature, research, and practices.

Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: two semesters of majors-level biology.

Outcomes
  • Identify the different types of immune cells and their function.
  • Describe how innate and adaptive immune systems function in defending the host against infections and in immune disorders.
  • Discuss the roles of vaccines in disease prevention.
  • Recognize how the host environment can modulate immune responses.
  • Able to explain common techniques that are used in current basic and clinical immunology research and diagnostics.
  • Critically evaluate peer-reviewed scientific articles on a topic of interest and summarize the information for their peers.
