  • This course examines the unique physiologies of animals adapted to live in extreme environments or conditions. Students will integrate and apply their knowledge of physiology and adaptive radiation in a final project where they will create a new organism and explain how it is adapted to a particular alien environment. By the end of the 7-weeks, students will have a deeper understanding and appreciation for the physiology of these animals and how they can overcome harsh biomes. Lecture material will be reinforced by reading and discussing scientific research articles on the animals and physiology covered. Examples of topics covered are specialized thermoregulation, behavior, metabolism, and more.
