Coral Reef Conservation and Management is designed to explore the conservation and management of coral reef ecosystems and will include a semester-long group project of developing a management plan for a coral reef region. The term will begin with a series of lectures, but then quickly transition to student led explorations of many of the dimensions that go into making management decisions, including understanding existing management practices, the values and interests of different stakeholder groups, and the pros and cons of alternate management options for particular objectives. Students will work in teams to design and execute a workplan for researching, drafting, and presenting a management plan. Along the way, students will be required to make difficult tradeoff decisions, often with incomplete information, and then defend their decisions. The course will culminate with the completion of a management plan document and presentations to classmates and coral reef stakeholders. A background in marine biology is not necessary.
