Course Description
Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2021-2022.
The chief aim of this course is to provide an understanding of how the tools of modern spectroscopy can be applied to unravel the structural and dynamical properties of molecular systems, with a focus on optical techniques. The course will cover the theoretical basis of light-matter interactions and factors governing the rotational, vibrational and electronic spectra of diatomic and polyatomic molecules. It will conclude with a consideration of what can be learned when cutting-edge spectroscopic techniques are applied to large, complex systems.
When Offered Spring.
Permission Note Enrollment limited to: graduate students studying Chemistry, Physics, Applied and Engineering Physics, and Engineering (Chemical, Electrical, Materials Science, and Mechanical).
Prerequisites/Corequisites Recommended prerequisite: two semesters of calculus and one year of physical chemistry or equivalent are strongly. Prior exposure to quantum mechanics is essential.
Comments The course is suitable for graduate students in chemistry, physics and related fields, and for advanced undergraduates. Offered at the level of Molecules and Radiation by Steinfeld.
