This course exposes MS students who have completed the Cornell Dietetic Internship with additional training in the conduct of research, the written communication of science, and peer-reviewed publishing. Throughout the semester, students will expand their DI pilot research project into a publishable scholarly paper. Through readings, discussions, exercises, and the development of the thesis, students will learn about the responsible conduct of research, construction of compelling scientific writing, selection of a scholarly journal appropriately matched to the topic, manuscript submission to a journal, and the peer review process.

Permission Note Enrollment limited to: MS-Dietetics students in the Division of Nutritional Sciences (DNS).
Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: successful completion of the Cornell Dietetic Internship, including NS 6250, NS 6350, and NS 5550.

Outcomes
  • Students will have strengthened research skills including data analysis and interpretation.
  • Students will have improved ability to construct evidence-based points-of-view, and in particular to integrate new data into existing evidence.
  • Students will have enhanced ability to compose and defend a written work of their own research.
  • Students will understand and practice ethical scholarly publishing procedures.
