Topics in Environmental Finance and Impact Investing

Course Description

Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2017-2018.

This graduate-level seminar addresses some of the key topics in environmental finance and impact investing faced by practitioners today. The focus is on developing an understanding of current trends in the industry and discussing challenges and likely outcomes. At completion of the course, students should have an understanding of how the tools of finance are being leveraged today to ensure more prudent management of natural resources and the fulfillment of particular social objectives.

Permission Note Enrollment limited to: MPA students.  Others (Masters, PhD students and advanced undergraduates) by permission of instructor. 

• Students will understand the key trends in the field of environmental finance and impact investing and the underlying principles of stakeholder identification, objective setting, engagement, and investability.
• Students will learn the roles that different types of financial institutions are playing in the development of the environmental and impact investing markets and which financial actors are leading the way.
• Students will analyze and develop a strategic understanding of the obstacles to the further development of environmental finance and impact investing, and be able to identify key policy, legal, and business questions that should be addressed as the fields become more mature.
