Course Description

Traditional forms of working-class or cross-class solidarity have been declining across the Global North. This class aimed at graduate students examines the critical and institutional social science literature analyzing this decline, as well as efforts to sustain or re-build solidaristic institutions. We will read classic and contemporary texts on the nature of solidarity, its erosion, and its renewal. Topics include financialization; austerity and welfare state retrenchment; migration, race, and citizenship; right wing populism; precarity and dualization; transnational labor activism; and new social movements.
