We will analyze issues of particular relevance to the hospitality sector and its associated labor markets. We will learn about the macro-economy by examining periods of economic crisis, including the global crisis of 2008 and the continuing crisis in the Eurozone. Topics include the causes and consequences of economic crises; the relationship between technological change and employment; structural transformation and the transition to a service-based economy; the changing nature of employment, including the rise of the so-called "gig economy"; and the impact of labor market policies and the Fight for $15.
