Philosophy of Education

Course Description

Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2017-2018.

Introduces students to the central questions of philosophy of education: What is the role of schooling in society? How does one become "educated?" How do educators foster ethical relations? Students develop responses to these questions by looking at the writings of prominent philosophers in the 20th century who have interrogated pedagogy, equity, curriculum, and the teacher-student relation. Under each of these topics, students similarly probe how recent writings in philosophy of education take up issues of gender, diversity, and citizenship.
