Course Description

This course is designed to enhance students' ability to navigate the complex and ever-evolving US system of government, the delivery of funding and services, and implementation of statutes and regulations. This course will provide students with first-hand accounts and analysis of governmental functions and roles, from local boards to state and federal government.

• Understand of the evolution and role of federalism, IGR, and IGM in the US. Identify and evaluate key points of decision making, policymaking, and funding within the US system of government. Understand the role of IGR actors -- elected officials, staff, and agency administrators -- at various levels of government.
• Think analytically about policy-implementation by breaking down programs into components and understanding the roles of different levels of government. Understand relationships and political interplay between federal, state, and local government in the implementation of public policy.
• Apply knowledge to current challenges in government; Identify and explain causes of IGR success and failure, through case studies; Ideas for reform.
