Course Description

Critical analyses of the impact of nutritional status on the mother, fetus, and young child in domestic and global contexts; advanced aspects of the biological bases of nutritional requirements for reproduction, growth, and development; and integration of nutrition with life and behavioral sciences in understanding these aspects are addressed.

Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: NS 1220 or permission of instructor.
Outcomes
- Students will explain and interpret the: • impact and outcomes of normal or adverse maternal or child nutritional status and their interactions with other environmental factors on development and growth in diverse contexts • assessment of dietary and nutritional health risks to mothers and their offspring in diverse contexts; and • influences of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and psychological factors on food and nutrition behavior in mothers and their offspring.
- Students will be able to • evaluate current research relevant to dietary recommendations or policy for mothers and children in diverse contexts • assess nutritional status, health risks and appropriate nutritional interventions for mothers and children in diverse contexts; and • translate nutritional needs into food choices and dietary recommendations for mothers and children in diverse contexts.
