Course Description
Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2016-2017.
Focuses on the process of effective strategy formulation and implementation from the perspective of the General Manager of a Business unit. Discusses situation analysis, tools for industry and business analysis, and development of business unit strategies. Emphasis on "conceptual skills" – i.e. seeing the big picture and identifying the critical strategic issues in a business. NBA 5790 is designed to build on the core strategy course, giving students the opportunity to apply frameworks and tools to strategic problems facing real companies. Skills gained will be particularly useful in case-based interviews and for students joining consulting companies. The course draws heavily on Professor Suwinski's experience developing and executing strategy for several businesses at Corning Incorporated and Professor Saenz's experience as a Managing Director at Bain & Co. working with clients on strategic analysis and strategy development. The final deliverable is a presentation in a mock Board of Directors environment that gives each student an opportunity to be in the role of a strategy consultant working on a real company/business strategy.
