Course Description
Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2016-2017.
Technologies such as the phonograph, microphone, magnetic tape and digital storage have profoundly transformed cultural attitudes towards music, but they have also transformed the way in which we hear and relate to the natural world. This course approaches this subject in a two-tracked structure, half in seminar form where students will react to and discuss readings relating to the fields of eco-musicology and sound studies, the other half hands-on, including listening assignments, instrument building, field recording, and other short creative exercises. For a final project students will have the option to choose between a seminar-style paper or a substantial creative undertaking, but all students will be expected to produce weekly audio journal entries, sourced from their own field recordings, that respond to subjects explored in the seminar.
