ITAL 6820
Course Description
Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2016-2017.
In 2011, the sesquicentennial anniversary of Italian unification registered a significant change in both national consciousness and history writing. Italy no longer appeared as "providentially" inscribed in history, but rather as a social and cultural invention, a political entity fabricated in a turbulent age in which the peninsula emancipated from foreign rule. This course will scrutinize the events, hopes, myths, and symbols that forged this new "imagined community." We will analyze multiple sources - political and literary texts, paintings and films - moving between the nineteenth century and the present, between the apogee of nationalism and the era of globalization.
