Modern Italian Novel

Course Description

In this seminar, we will read Alberto Moravia's Agostino (194), Italo Calvino's Il sentiero dei nidi di ragno (1947), and Natalia Ginzburg's Caro Michele (1973).  These three short novels, all by prominent twentieth-century Italian authors, address issues ofyouth, self-discovery, and political conflict.  As we engage in an in-depth reading of these author's lucid prose, we will grapple with questions about subjectivity, sexuality, and censorship, and we will explore how the authors push the boundaries of traditional coming-of-age narratives, telling a private and public history of contemporary Italy through its silences and growing pains.
