Comprehensive introduction to industrial and labor relations and collective bargaining in the United States; the negotiation, scope, and day-to-day administration of contracts; the major substantive issues in bargaining, including their implication for public policy; industrial conflict; the major challenges facing unions and employers today; and U.S. industrial relations in international and comparative perspective.

  • Analyze the sources of union and management bargaining power.
  • Understand the influence of economic, social, and political pressures on labor and employment relations.
  • Evaluate the efficacy of current labor laws.

  • Understand the dynamics of negotiations and conflict resolution.
  • Assess evidence regarding the impact of collective bargaining on workplace and societal outcomes.
