Explores the diversity, ecology and evolution of microbial associations with invertebrates. Some lectures will provide demonstrations so that students can view and work with microbes and invertebrates and learn some research methods. Lecture periods will also include some on-campus field trips.

Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: general biology.

Outcomes
  • 1.1 Students will learn how to characterize and compare different types of associations and the resulting impacts on both microbes and invertebrate hosts. 1.2 Students will investigate the biology, ecology and evolution of different types of invertebrate-microbe associations.
  • 2.1 Students will learn that working together with partners during discussion and during demonstration laboratories can result in increased insights. 2.2 Students will work together in small groups to present information from the literature 2.3 A debate will be conducted about a controversial topic.
  • 3.1 Students will learn to conduct literature searches, evaluate the scientific literature and synthesize information to gain an overall understanding of a subject. 3.2 Students will learn to understand and evaluate information found in the primary literature.
  • 4.1 Students will learn how to recognize different types of microbes associated with different invertebrate hosts.
