Contemporary Korean Society

Course Description

This course is designed to give students a comprehensive overview of contemporary Korean society. We will take up the two major topics of (1) political democratization and democracy, (2) economic development and its consequences. Later, we will pose the following questions: (3) to what degree does contemporary Korean society realize fairness and efficiency? Are these contradictory values? (4) What will the future be like? Within each of the broad topics explored in the course, we seek to achieve three central objectives: (1) to examine some of the most salient features of Korean society; (2) to explore the differences and similarities between Korea and other developing and developed countries; (3) to discuss some of the key problems that Korea has to face in the near future, and research agendas posed by these problems. Overall, the course will provide students with deeper understanding of Korean society required for becoming critical producers and consumers of information and research on Korea.
