Culture and Politics of the 1960s

Nearly half a century ago, the civil rights movement, the Cold War, and Vietnam stimulated critiques and alternative lifestyles that changed American society forever. What can the experiences of young "boomers" who lived through the 1960s teach a later generation living through similar crises and hopes? This interdisciplinary course combines an historical overview with the close reading of texts, concentrating on racial justice, war, the counterculture, the New Left, the women's movement, and gay and lesbian rights. Texts will include The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Kubrick's film Dr. Strangelove, Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five, music of Dylan and Joplin, speeches of King, manifestos, memoirs, and poems.
