Power and Politics in Organizations

This course focuses on interpersonal influence, offering science-backed practical insights, tools, and strategies to help you become more politically astute and effective within your groups. You will learn how to enhance your influence and leadership capabilities without compromising your authenticity, and how to set yourself up for both immediate and long-term career success. For the past five years, this course has been the most popular elective at the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management. After completing this course, you will be able to (1) Diagnose the sources and distribution of power within your groups and organizations; (2) Develop strategies for building your own sources of power; (3) Recognize your natural influence style and refine your communication and interaction skills to increase your impact; (4) Apply the principles of power and influence in organizational settings; and (5) Identify and guard against common pitfalls of power, such as ethical lapses and the loss of power.
