Course Description
Course information provided by the 2026-2027 Catalog.
This course is designed for students who are serious about learning to write effectively in the workplace. The reasonably rigorous course workload will help you learn how to think in a disciplined and systematic way so that you prepare documents that accomplish your communication goals, meet your readers? needs and expectations, and exceed those expectations (where possible and appropriate). The detailed, customized feedback that you will receive from the course instructor in response to each document that you prepare will enable you to enhance your competence, develop justified self-confidence, and become more versatile and efficient. By focusing on email messages and memo-reports, you will learn how to manage the four elements common to all workplace documents: structure, content-value, document-design, and phrasing. You?ll also learn how to use AI effectively: so that, rather than outsource your thinking, you use AI as a helpful communication coach. The course is suitable for all students, no matter whether English is their native language or a second or third language?but only if they are seriously interested in improving their writing skills. The coursework includes readings and brief case analyses assigned for each class session?and roughly one writing assignment due each week. (MHA-EL)
