Course Description
Course information provided by the 2026-2027 Catalog.
Dynamics of micro-and nano-particles, which contain many molecules but are small enough that molecular effects are important. Topics include: the formation and growth of particles; their transport, rheological and phase behaviors; and their role in technologies including paints, foods, health-care products, drug delivery, composite materials and air pollution control.
Enrollment Priority Open to: Students in any STEM field.
Last 4 Terms Offered 2025FA, 2024FA, 2023FA, 2022FA
Learning Outcomes
- Analyze the electrostatic, van der Waals, Brownian, polymer-induced, and hydrodynamic forces acting on interacting particles.
- Describe how suspension microstructures develop in different physicochemical and flow environments.
- Describe the literature in an area of application of colloids or aerosols and be able to discuss the role of the principles of colloid/aerosol science in this application.
