Course information provided by the 2026-2027 Catalog.

This course is premised on the idea that printed matter exists in a range of sizes and formats, each carrying its own traditions, histories, and expectations. In turn, these formats suggest specific publics. How can we use, subvert, and expand them to explore the potential of printed media to bridge the gap between public and private modes of address? Think of a calling card, a postcard, a flyer, a letter, a poster, a zine, wallpaper, or a book?what was each of these meant to do? What else might it do? The course will integrate theory, history, and practice. On the production side, students will learn to use a Risograph printer as well as several bookbinding techniques. The course will be contextualized through readings that expand our understanding of what we mean by public, private, and circulation. This course welcomes all students, regardless of previous experience in printmaking or image-making. (ART-STU)
