This course will critically analyze the labor, political, racial and environmental struggles that have characterized the shaping of the coalfields of Southern West Virginia and to some extent, other Appalachian coalfields. Why for 130 years have so many families embraced and fought against King Coal? What has been the role of the Mine Workers union (UMWA) in shaping hope in the region? How big of a deal is religion? Race? Geography? What comprises Life in these regions of America? Attendance and participation mandatory.
