Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2022-2023. Courses of Study 2022-2023 is scheduled to publish mid-June.

This course will review the basis of finite element analysis (FEA), such as shape function construction and the continuous Galerkin method. The initial focus will be on FEA for the convection-diffusion equation, streamline upwind Petrov-Galerkin formulation, FEA for the Stokes problem and the Navier-Stokes equations, and variational multiscale method. We then introduce the weak formulation of structural mechanics, the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian technique, and provide an overview of interface-capturing methods for fluid-structure interaction. If time allows, we will cover generalized-alpha time integration schemes, coupled boundary conditions for lumped-parameter networks, and specialized iterative methods for incompressible flows with an emphasis on cardiovascular applications.
