This course will cover emerging topics and methods in field linguistics, with a focus on quantitative methods. Topics include: psycholinguistic experiments in the field; psycholinguistic research based on observational data (e.g. language acquisition studies); documentation of conversation, including research on conversational structure (e.g. turn timing); and documentation of variation, including quantitative sociolinguistic studies. Students will learn to conduct, as well as reproduce, quantitative analyses of field data using the programming language R. Background in field methods and/or R are helpful but not required.
