Additional Information
Oceans and coasts are vital aspects of our world—society, culture, ecology and economy. The coasts are home to 40% of the world’s population and serve as vital habitats and nursery grounds for multiple terrestrial and aquatic species. Additionally, these areas are on the leading edge of climate change impact. Sea level rise, compounded by coastal subsidence in some areas, impact the landscape, the groundwater and ecology. Ocean acidification has untold impacts on coral reefs, shellfish and other ocean inhabitants. There are multiple legal and management tools to use to address some of these concerns, while more innovative policy is needed in others. This course will have weekly readings with associated presentations by Cornell faculty and guest speakers and discussion. Student teams will develop white papers/fact sheets on timely ocean and coastal topics and reflect various policy and management options to address these unique issues as pre-determined by the instructor.
