Human Factors: Anthropometrics and Apparel

Course Description

Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2019-2020.

A seminar that focuses on the human form and its relationship to clothing. Readings and discussion of quantification of body sizes and human variation; historical, cultural, and aesthetic concepts of fit; apparel sizing techniques; national and international sizing systems and standards; and the impact of new technologies such as body scanning on sizing and fit issues. Students will participate in a group project to investigate an issue related to these topics.

Permission Note Enrollment limited to: advanced undergraduates.
Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: statistics course.

• Demonstrate the ability to read and analyze research and other publications critically.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of technology on the production of apparel, and how technology, distribution, and production methods affect the sizing of apparel.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the issues related to apparel fit, and the relationship between fit and sizing.
