Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2019-2020.

The analysis of fine art by art historians involves the close examination of various images of the works of art. The image data available for this course include digitized x-radiographs of paintings by Johannes Vermeer and beta-radiographs of prints by Rembrandt van Rijn. This course will provide a basic description of traditional manual examinations of canvas and paper art supports, such as thread counting and cusping analysis of canvas and watermark identification, chainline spacing, and laid line frequency assessment of antique laid paper. Recently developed tools for automating these tasks based on the two-dimensional Fourier Transform and decision tree building will be employed and assessed in studies in canvas rollmate and laid paper moldmate identification.
